Immigration Policy Shift in Canada

Canada’s influence in today’s world is a thing that can never be disagreed upon. Being one of the most peaceful and diverse countries in the world coupled with great development and welfare policies, Canada continues to be one of the most sought after destinations in the world as we have discussed before in our blog posts. The immigration policies of Canada have been favorable to skilled and even sometimes unskilled immigrants but there has been a recent policy change which might make some things, well, different.

Canada is a nation that cannot ignore the young because of its aging population and thus youth will have a great role in shaping up Canada’s future and help in departments from labor shortages to skilled technical demands. The question is, with the new immigration change how the youth from other countries will now come to Canada.

Before Canada used to have more immigrants who stayed there as permanent residents and this helped the Canadian economy to grow. But recently, especially from the year 2006 onwards Canadian immigration policies have favored more of temporary foreign workers on the Canadian soil rather than permanent residents. This has a host of advantages as well as disadvantages.

While the country gets hands on specific areas it needs, without additional burden to the country’s resources, having only temporary foreign workers who will leave the country after the completion of their assignment, has its disadvantages too. The temporary workers during their stay in Canada would get to know the ways of the Canadian people and the workings there and would be more suitable to adjust and help the country’s economy. Sending them back after the assignment would sometimes just mean wasting a human resource.

Though some of these temporary foreign workers do attain permanent residency in Canada later on, the majority of them never get a chance to convert their status to permanent residency. As most guest permits are valid for four years, after the expiry of these years the guest foreign workers must leave the country.

It is to be remembered that companies hire people for their own benefits and what is good for the companies in Canada isn’t necessarily good for the Canadian people as well. Companies would always like cheap labor and might even think short term, but the Canadian government must ensure that valuable human resource is not wasted as skilled labor and labor shortages might haunt Canada again in future. The Canadian government needs to look after the public interests more in this regard.
